Ingredients

  • 4-5 navel oranges

  • vodka

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1 cup water

Preparation

  1. Peel the rind off the orange. Make sure not to get the white pith. It’s bitter and gross. I recommend a high quality vegetable peeler for the job.

  2. Plop the rinds in a glass jar and pour the vodka over them. You want to make sure that the rinds are completely submerged. If any bit of the rind is exposed to air, it’ll grow moldy and ruin your batch.

  3. Allow the rinds to soak for at least 4 weeks. Longer is probably better. I normally do 6 weeks. Keep your jar in a dark cool place and shake it daily. Or whenever you remember. I’m not going to lie, I often forget about my projects for weeks and it still comes out perfectly fine. The “experts” say daily, but don’t stress too much about it.

  4. When the mixture is ready, strain the vodka, disposing of the rinds.

  5. Prepare your simple syrup. Simple syrup is the easiest thing in the world to make- I don’t understand why people buy it premade. Just take equal parts sugar and hot water and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. You can do this in a pot on your stove top, or you can just heat up some water in your kettle and pour it on the sugar in a bowl.

  6. Allow the simple to cool and add it to taste to your vodka. Voila!

See this thing? It's all cool looking right? That's all it's good for, believe me. Just use a normal glass jar and lid and save yourself the $100.
